At its core, play therapy is a specialised form of therapy that utilises play as a means of communication and healing. Unlike traditional talk therapy, play therapy recognises that children have their own unique ways of expressing themselves, and play serves as a natural vehicle for self-expression. Through play therapy, children can gain insights, process emotions, and work through challenges in a safe and supportive environment.
When referred for therapeutic play, a strengths and difficulties questionnaire is completed, alongside a parent discussion about the hopes and expectations of the therapeutic sessions. Initially 12 sessions will be agreed, to take place weekly for 40 minutes. The play therapy tool kit will available consistently in each session, which allows the child to choose from the mediums in the room and through metaphor and play explore the themes that were most pertinent to them, alongside the introduction of more directed interventions when appropriate.
Progress will be monitored through a review at week 9, with the option of extending the sessions. Following the end of sessions, a report will be sent to parents and school with the outcome of the sessions, and any further recommendations.
